Master the Art of Goal Achieving
Did you make any New Year’s resolutions for yourself this year? If so, have you acted on them yet? If not, you are not alone.
New Years’ is a time for a fresh start. A chance for a clean slate. But those who set goals on New Year’s Eve do not typically see them through. In fact, according to one study by the University of Scranton, only eight percent of goals set on New Year’s Eve are achieved.
That is a 92 percent failure rate, which is disheartening when you think about it. But that is because most people who set goals do not set them correctly (see Master the Art of Goal Setting) and do not approach achieving them in the correct way.
I do not say this to dissuade you from setting a big goal or reaching for the stars; I am simply laying out the facts. My hope? That our Goals series will give you the tools you need to achieve all your goals, no matter how big or outlandish they might be.
Six Steps to Successful Goal Achievement
1 Get an Accountability Partner
We frequently let ourselves off the hook way too easily. We make excuses and create the logic that allows us to quit. While it may take some work to find a person that believes enough in your goals to hold you accountable, it is worth the effort. Accountability greatly increases your chances of doing what you say you are going to do.
Accountability separates the wishers in life from the action takers
that care enough about their future to account for their daily actions.
2 Form a Master Mind Group
A good Mastermind group can change your life. There is no better way to navigate the difficult challenges in life, and in entrepreneurship, than the collective experience of others. We are not unique. We come from different political, religious, ethnic and age groups, but the fundamental problems most humans face are shared among a group of peers.
Mastermind groups were introduced by Napoleon Hill in his book, “Think and Grow Rich” – a must read. Hill defines the principle as, “Coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose.”
In other words, it means surrounding yourself with smart and engaged people that share your view of life, because the power of several people is exponentially more powerful than you alone.
3 Start a Vision Board or Journal
A vision board is a tool used to help clarify, concentrate, and maintain focus on what truly matters to you. A vision board is any sort of board on which you display images that represent whatever you want to be, do, or have in your life.
What is the point of making a vision board? Simply put, life is busy, and we are constantly bombarded by distractions and interruptions. Creating and using a vision board serves several purposes, some of which include helping you to:
- Identify your vision for your life and give it clarity
- Reinforce your daily affirmations
- Keep your attention on your intentions
4 Create a Power Life Script
A Power Life Script is a tool you can use to deeply root your desires in your sub-conscious mind, so well that their achievement happens on autopilot. Do you have a life script? And if so, how does it look?
Words are unbelievably powerful! Many of us grew up being told that we were not capable of achieving great things, and we would never succeed because of our heritage, social status, or background. We allow the outside circumstances to influence our inner beliefs. We allow our feeling and beliefs about the past to limit our effectiveness and happiness in the present. We consent to other authors but us, to write our script and define our life story.
Instead of living out of the script written for you by your well-intentioned family, authority figures, or friends, start living out of your script, which you wrote, based on your self-selected value system. You are the one who writes the story, and you can change the narrative at any time.

5 Invest in Yourself
Personal development is the key to bettering yourself. If you are a business owner, and especially if you are a solopreneur, you are your business. Looking after yourself and working on yourself is so important. You are your greatest asset, so how are you investing in yourself and how are you striving to learn and be just a little bit better today, than yesterday? If you want to create personal success, it is wise to invest in your personal development.
“Only 20% of the reasons you are not achieving you goal are on the outside.
Always start with yourself.” Brian Tracy
6 Write a Statement of Desire
Read, review, and absorb the chapter on “Desire” in Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich”. Hill states the method by which desire for riches can be transmuted into its financial equivalent, consists of six definite and practical steps:
- Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire. Be definite as to the amount.
- Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for the money you desire. There is no such thing as something for nothing.
- Establish a definite date when you intend to possess the money you desire.
- Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action.
- Write out a clear, concise statement of the amount of money you intend to acquire, name the time limit for its acquisition, state what you intend to give in return for the money and clearly describe the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.
- Read your written statement aloud, twice daily.
